Emergency Expense Checklist: Who to Call and What to Do First

Check your options online →

When an unexpected bill lands, panic leads to expensive choices. Work through this checklist in order.

  1. Confirm the real deadline. Many bills have a grace period.
  2. Call the biller. Ask for a payment plan, a hardship program or a later date.
  3. Check what you can cut or pause for a month.
  4. Call 211 for help with rent, utilities and food.
  5. Ask your employer about a paycheck advance.
  6. Compare loan costs. Start with a credit union PAL (28% APR cap), then a small personal loan.
  7. If you still need a short-term loan, borrow the minimum, check the APR and total repayment, and pick a due date you can meet.
